The STAR structure
| Part | What to say | Share of answer |
|---|---|---|
| Situation | Where and when, in one or two sentences | 10–15% |
| Task | What you had to achieve | 10–15% |
| Action | What you did, step by step | 50–60% |
| Result | What changed, ideally with a number, and what you learned | 20% |
Practise it
- Say it out loud with a timer. Two minutes is the usual ceiling.
- Prepare six to eight stories that cover teamwork, conflict, failure, leadership, pressure and initiative. Most questions map onto one of them.
- Not sure which questions to expect? Use the interview question generator.
Full worked examples are in the STAR interview technique guide.
